The Christian Vocation to Love

A vocation is not an obligation.  It is the particular way in which God calls us to love.  When deacons are requesting to obtain orders, they write a letter to their bishops saying that they wish to be ordained for the salvation of their souls, from a free choice of their wills, for the greater glory of God.  I reflect on these words often:  no where in the letter do deacons write that they respond because they are obligated to respond.  They answer because they love the God who loved them first.  Remember this when you are responding to your vocation, no matter what you are called to do.  Respond not out of a sense of obligation, but with a generous heart.  Respond not because you feel obligated to answer, but because you want to give your entire self to God for having loved you first.
